What does ‘processed through ISC New York’ mean on USPS tracking?

The United States Postal Service (USPS; also known as the Post Office, U.S. Mail, or Postal Service) is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for providing postal service in the United States, including its insular areas and associated states.

It is one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the United States Constitution.

ISC NY is a post office. Mail is normally there less than a day. They are not Customs. I suspect your issue is that you have no update in tracking and that is because when mail leaves there it is being transported in a container and cannot be scanned for tracking until it is unloaded at another postal facility.

What does ‘processed through ISC New York’ mean on USPS tracking?

International Service Center (ISC) is where mail goes when arriving in or departing from the USA. These are generally located at the airports where mail ships by air.

There is no surface mail from the USA. From there it is sent to a local Distribution Center, where mail is sorted for locations within the US or it goes to the airport to wait for a flight to the destination country, or some place that is intermediate.

Remember that tracking tells you only where it was at the exact moment listed. No new tracking does not mean that it is still there.

It can be days until it is transported to another facility where it will be sorted again. In nearly all cases, after tracking data is collected, the mail is loaded onto trucks within a few hours for the next journey. There is no storage of mail.

How long does it usually take for a small package to clear a USPS ISC?

ISC (International Service Center) has only one function, to send mail on its way to the next location. Since some sorting operations take place only once a day, no package should be there for 24 hours.

What confuses people is that after it is done there, it will be in transport, where tracking is not able to be done. Parcel tracking is done on machines at postal facilities.

No update after ISC means it is moving to the next state in its journey. Tracking is unable to tell you where something is but can tell you only where it was at that minute.

Where does a package go after it leaves the ISC USPS in New York?

If it is leaving the country, it goes to nearby JFK airport to await a flight. A large portion of mail going overseas will not then be updated in tracking.

If it is coming into the country, it is transported to the Distribution Center that serves the destination Zip Code. Because they only serve a portion of the US, much will leave there by truck. There won’t be updates in tracking until it gets there and gets sorted.

What is ISC? Has my package already gone through customs?

If the package is arriving in the USA, the ISC (International Service Center) gets mail after it has been through Customs Inspection. After ISC, it is in transportation to the state where it will be delivered.

If the package is leaving the USA, there is no Customs Inspection. It just goes to the airport nearby to await the plane heading in the right direction. There may be no more tracking at all. Tracking isn’t perfect. That’s why it is free.

Why do my package go through the ISC in New York?

Packages go through the International Service Center (ISC) in New York for several reasons:

  1. Strategic Location: New York City is a major air hub for international traffic, making it an ideal location for a facility that handles inbound and outbound mail. JFK International Airport, where the ISC is located, is one of the busiest airports in the world.
  2. Expertise and Infrastructure: The ISC in New York is staffed with experienced customs officials and equipped with state-of-the-art technology to process large volumes of mail and packages efficiently. It can handle millions of items daily.
  3. Integration with USPS Network: The ISC is well-integrated into the USPS distribution network, allowing for seamless movement of mail and packages once they have cleared customs. This ensures that international shipments are quickly routed to their final destinations.
  4. Customs Clearance Efficiency: The ISC in New York has a dedicated customs clearance facility, which streamlines inspecting and clearing international shipments. This helps to minimize delays and ensure that packages reach their recipients promptly.

Is USPS responsible for lost packages?

The USPS liability is restricted to lost, damaged, and/or missing content claims for the following products: Insured Mail (includes any mail class purchased with Insurance, i.e. First-Class Mail or Priority Mail).

Must Read:

To anyone still Googling this, doNOT believe anyone telling you that seeing this when you track your package means it has cleared customs. It doesn’t.

I can’t speak to whether the process of inspecting your package is arbitrary but I do know that I just had a package enter ISC New York a few days ago, and indeed 3 days later my tracking was updated with “Inbound into Customs” then “Inbound Out of Customs” before it went to the distribution center to be routed to my local post office.

Just figured I’d post this since I saw so much misinformation about whether or not this means your package has already gone through customs.
