How To Cancel PayPal Payment? – Guide 2023

You can cancel only unclaimed payments. If your payment is complete, please contact the recipient of the payment to request a refund. Unclaimed payments can be cancelled for the following reasons:

  • A payment sent to an email address is not associated with a PayPal account. Once the email address is added to a PayPal account, the payment is automatically credited to the balance of that account.
  • A payment is sent to a recipient with an unconfirmed email address. For security reasons, PayPal can only credit payments sent to a confirmed email address.

Here’s how to cancel a payment:

  1. On the Activity page, locate the pending payment.
  2. Click Cancel.
  3. On the next page click Cancel Payment.

Note: If Cancel is not an option in the Order status/Actions column, the payment has been claimed and cannot be cancelled.

If you cancel an eCheck payment or Instant Transfer, the money will be withdrawn from your bank account but credited back to your PayPal account balance. If you can’t cancel the payment, then you still have the option to request a refund.

Can I cancel a payment that I’ve already sent?

You can only cancel payments if they are sent to unregistered email addresses and cell phone numbers (the seller has not yet opened the account to redeem the payment), or if the email and phone have been entered incorrectly. They will appear as unclaimed and will remain pending in your PayPal account.

If the payment has been completed, you won’t be able to cancel it yourself because the recipient will have already received the money. To cancel a payment that has been completed, contact the recipient directly and request a refund.

Here’s how to cancel a pending payment:

  1. On the Movements page, locate the pending payment.
  2. Click Cancel in the Pending Payment section.
  3. Click on Cancel payment.

Important notes:

  • You can only cancel an unclaimed payment that has the Cancel link next to it.
  • A pending payment is automatically cancelled if the recipient does not claim or accept it within 30 calendar days.
  • If you pay by credit or debit card and the payment is cancelled, the amount will be returned to the method used.
  • Term: The refund period will be from 5 to 30 calendar days.

If you wish to request a refund for a successfully completed payment, we show you how to find the recipient’s contact information:

  1. On the Movements page, click on the payment you wish to be reimbursed for.
  2. Once you locate the recipient’s email, send them a message requesting a refund.

If the recipient (or the seller) does not accept or make a refund of your payment You will have the option of opening a dispute in the Resolution Center of your PayPal account. And you can contact your seller through your PayPal account to resolve your request.

What are my options if the PayPal payment can’t be canceled?

If you don’t detect it in time or the recipient already has a PayPal account, you still have a few options to get your money back. The ideal situation here is when you know and trust the recipient. Just ask them to pay you back. It’s easy for them from the Activity page and it won’t cost anyone any money.

PayPal is also accepted at a wide variety of online retailers, but these transfers are more difficult to retrieve. Your first option here should be to request a refund from the retailer, which is usually done on their website or via customer service email. You will probably need to return everything you bought, and the process could take a week or more.

A retailer may reject your refund request, but their options don’t end there. You can report a problem in the PayPal Resolution Center, where a customer service representative will review your case. This does not guarantee that you will get your money back, but PayPal is generally good at granting customer requests within reason.

Why is the payment I sent pending? Can I cancel it?

If a payment you sent is pending or unclaimed, it means the recipient hasn’t received or hasn’t accepted the payment yet.

A payment will be pending or unclaimed if:

  • It was sent to an email address or phone number that isn’t registered to a verified PayPal account. In this case, you’ll be able to cancel the payment. Go to your Activity, find the payment and hit Cancel.
  • The recipient has opted not to automatically accept some payments. These could be payments not in their preferred currency, or from buyers with unconfirmed addresses. In these cases, the option to cancel the payment won’t be available in your Activity. The recipient needs to accept or deny the payment.

We automatically cancel pending or unclaimed payments after 30 days and send the money back to its original source. Refunds to bank accounts may take up to 5 days, while refunds to credit or debit cards may take up to 30 days.

Can you refund a PayPal payment?

You can request a refund of a completed payment by sending the seller an email. Ask the seller to go to the Transaction Details page for your transaction and click Issue a refund. You can request a refund up to 180 days after you pay for your item.
