How Many Beers To Get Drunk?

How Many Beers To Get Drunk?

Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drinks in the world, and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea. Beer is brewed from cereal grains-most commonly from malted barley, though wheat, maize (corn), and rice are also used.

During the brewing process, fermentation of the starch sugars in the wort produces ethanol and carbonation in the resulting beer. Most modern beer is brewed with hops, which add bitterness and other flavours and act as a natural preservative and stabilizing agent.

Other flavouring agents such as gruit, herbs, or fruits may be included or used instead of hops. In commercial brewing, the natural carbonation effect is often removed during processing and replaced with forced carbonation.

How Many Beers To Get Drunk?

Most of us already know how many beers it takes to get us buzzed, or really drunk, on average. To find out all about this, I went out researching and found out the tools and charts that will help us all. First time starters may find this information especially useful.

For the average guy of 190 pounds (86kg) it takes 4 to 5 beers in 1 hour to get drunk, while for the average woman of 160lbs or 73kg, it’s 3 to 4 beers. The term “to get drunk” here means above 0.08% of blood alcohol content (BAC), and in US that means legally intoxicated (or legally drunk).

Far, far too many.

I’m a large guy, approx 100kg, strong but not gym fit. I have a few extra pounds these days, but my lean weight that I am comfortable at is about 95kg. So I’m bigger than many, but by no means massive or obese.

With that in mind, my metabolism for alcohol is stupidly fast. I simply can’t get to a point where others would recognise me as being drunk on beer. The quantity of liquid I would need to consume in a short space of time is overwhelming.

I have tested this a few times against breathalysers. The most memorable was when I drank four double gin and tonics over 90 minutes, walked home and tested myself. I read 0.15 (legal driving limit in the U.K. Is 0.35), so was under the limit. We tested the device against somone else the following day who had drunk less than me and he blew 0.98.

The problem from my point of view is that to get to the point where I am noticeably “relaxed” we are talking about something like four pints of beer (approx 10 units). This makes drinking an expensive way to unwind!

On top of that, I also get hung over pretty easily too. Those four pints that just about brought me to the point of being “relaxed”, not even close to being drunk, would definitely leave me feeling sorry for myself the following day.

This has its downsides as well as upsides.

  • I don’t drink to get drunk. Ever. There is simply no mileage in it. I would have to drink spirits rapidly, and that is just not fun.
  • I can drink alcohol all day and stay sharp. This doesn’t happen often, but I recently got to test this at a wedding – we started at midday (a beer with the groom before the service), champagne straight after with refills flowing, wine on the tables at dinner, spirits (evil things), and late in the evening beer. I estimate I had about 40 units over the day, and was at no point drunk. On the other hand, the morning after was hell.
  • Generally my judgement stays good all night long.

Somehow the genetic lottery has given me this “gift”. No idea why.

  • 2–3 beers: “Hey, I’m feeling good. Lauren? Pssh, ‘over her; yesterday’s news. What’s on TV?”
  • 4–6 beers: “It’s only 1:00am, ‘wonder how Lauren’s doing? I’ll call her. Dude, I know she said don’t call anymore, but she’ll hear me out this time… trust me.”
  • 7 plus beers: “I lovvve you, man… you… you… are going to be my Best Man when Lauren and I get married. Why won’t she pick up??? ZZZZZ”

How Much 3.2% Alcohol Drinks to Get Drunk?

For an average sized man of 190 pounds (or 89 kg), it would take 6 to 7 beers of 3.2% ABV to get legally drunk in the US. For an average 160 pound (or 72 kg) woman, it would take 4-5 3.2% ABV beers to get legally drunk in the US. Legally drunk means that you will have a blood alcohol content equal to or greater than 0.08%.

Note that this is not a 100% correct answer for everyone, but an average approximation. The person is also assumed to be healthy, over 21 years of age, slept well and not fatigued, and generally in good health.

Can You Get Drunk In One Beer?

You are considered drunk if the level of alcohol in your blood is greater than 0.08%. One beer consumed per hour can maintain that level in the blood. However, you will not feel drunk. Drinking 3-4 beers every hour can make you feel drunk.

Will 4 beers get you drunk?

Yes, drinking four beers will make you feel drunk. A small beer (16 oz) contains the same amount of alcohol as a shot of hard liquor (1 to 1 ½ oz). Four beers results in a 300-degree liquor that is well above the prescribed 86-degree drink levels. Even if you drink light beer, you may end up consuming fewer calories, but the alcohol level will remain the same.

How many beers is equal to a drink?

A 12-ounce beer contains the same amount of alcohol present in 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of beer.

Can beer make us drunk?

I am always surprised at questions like this. Fairly easily answered with a less than $10 investment and a trip to the supermarket.

Like with any alcoholic drink, getting drunk is factored by quantity, ABV,time, metabolism, body weight and food consumption. Increase any of the last four and it takes longer to get drunk. Increase the first two and you get drunk faster.

Legally, anything over .08% alcohol in the blood is drunk, and that is generally considering one beer, consumed per hour. You probably won’t notice it much.

Increase the rate to 3 or 4 beers per hour and you will feel it. Unless you are Andre the Giant.

How much beer should I drink the first time? I want to know how it feels. Do you really feel true to yourself while you are drunk?

Two will wear off too quickly. Your first time you will feel a bit drunker then you will in the future, but it will absolutely wear off too quickly. You will end up sober with a headache before even saying goodbye to your friends.

This is ok if you have to drive somewhere, but if you aren’t planning on driving, three would be much better. I’m assuming you are talking about weak beers in the 4-5% ABV range.

If after two you feel buzzed enough, drink a glass of water for 20-30 minutes, then drink the third one slowly. This will allow you to keep your buzz for an extra hour.

If you don’t do this, you will sober up way too fast. You will be the first person to leave. It won’t be as fun.

How much intake of alcohol does it take for one to get drunk? How many shots? How many cans of beer? How many glasses of wine?

It depends on the person.

  • Size. Larger people need more alcohol to spread out in their bodies before alcohol levels are high enough to give them a feeling of being drunk.
  • Fat content. Alcohol spreads in water, not in fat. So if you are big, but most of your body weight is fat, you will react like a smaller person.
  • Genes making liver enzymes. Some people have genes that makes fast enzymes. These enzymes breaks down alcohol quickly, so they need more alcohol to top up on the removal rate. Other people have slow enzymes; their livers will soon be overworked and the alcohol will spread in their bodies.
  • Adaption. If your body is used to large amounts of alcohol, it will adapt, developing a tolerance. It will make proteins and cell membrane components that prevent intoxication, so you will need more alcohol to feel inebriated.

Generally it is estimated that one unit (12g) of alcohol is enough to make the average person too drunk to be acting safely in traffic and such.

12g alcohol is about 9mL pure ethanol. The alcohol content in a beverage will usually be given in vol%. vol% = (mL pure ethanol/mL total liquid)*100%

So you can calculate how many mL of pure alcohol there are in each beverage you mentioned.

Can 5% alcohol get you drunk?

If you look at the alcohol percentage on beers, it doesn’t seem like they’re all that different. As you‘d expect, it has to do with how our bodies process alcohol. Our bodies can process some alcohol continuously, this is known as units of alcohol.

Is getting drunk once a week too much?

Experts explain moderate drinking as one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. Exceeding that puts you at risk for becoming an alcoholic.

Must Read:

Is it OK to get drunk every night?

“While there are a number of variables, typically having a drink every night does not necessarily equate to alcohol use disorder, but it can increase the risk of developing alcohol-related health problems,” Lawrence Weinstein, MD, Chief Medical Officer at American Addiction Centers tells WebMD Connect to Care.

Conclusion

If you don’t already know the answer to that question, then the answer is one. I won’t debate the pros and cons of getting drunk, I’ll just try to answer the question.

How many beers it actually takes to get drunk depends on a number of factors: the actual size and strength of the beers; your age, weight, gender, metabolism; experience with (tolerance for) alcohol; what you eat before and while drinking; and of course how drunk you are looking to become.

Start with one; if you don’t feel the desired effect, have another. If you’re new to drinking, or light weight, you should probably stop there until you understand the results. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery.

Oh, and you will feel a lot better tomorrow, if you have a glass of water for each alcoholic beverage you consume. This will help counteract the diuretic effects of the alcohol, which are the primary cause of hangovers.
